Medical School Loan's Top Medical School Profiles: University of Denver

Medical School Loans is dedicated to helping students obtain the best medical education possible. To assist you in planning and making college choices, we provide information on the top medical schools in the country. This article profiles the University of Denver /Health Sciences Center School of Medicine (UCDHSC), ranked #2 in primary care medical training by U.S. News & World Report in its 2008 report.

History and Influence

The history of the UCDHSC and its affiliated hospitals and clinics is diverse. For example, the University of Colorado Hospital at Denver (UCHD) was founded in 1921 by the Colorado General Assembly three years after the founding of the college. Its mission was to become a principal medical teaching hospital for the Rocky Mountain region. Today, that mission has been expanded to become the premier regional medical school for both primary care and research.

U.S. News & World Report awarded its 2008 ranking to the primary care portion of the hospital and training facility. Some of the major centers within the UCHD primary care program receiving recognition are in Cancer, Digestive Diseases, Ear, Nose and Throat, Geriatrics, Gynecology, Heart and Heart Surgery, Hormonal disorders, Kidney disease, Neurology and neurosurgery, Respiratory disorders, Urology, Rheumatology, and Orthopedics. The 2008 report lists all of these specialized programs as primary medical training nationally, not just within the region.

Although research had been a part of the UCD School of Medicine program for many years, in 1995 the Anschutz Medical Campus was added. Located in nearby Aurora, the facilities began with the renovation of a decommissioned Army Hospital and continued to expand to become the current UCDHSC.

For students interested in pursuing medical careers in research, the Fitzsimmons campus was established to work with over 160 local bioresearch firms and has already received international recognition in genome research. The UCDHSC was a partner in the International Consortium, successful in the Deciphering Rhesus Macaque Monkey Genome (recognized in April 2007). Also in April of 2007, the Fitzsimmons research center made new discoveries in Cancer Tumor Survival during Radiation Therapy.

Denver's School of Medicine Program

While attending the UCDMSH program, participants are expected to contribute several hours of study and hands-on practice in their profession during day, evening and weekend hours.

To support students in their studies, the School of Medicine has a renowned teaching staff, an extensive medical research library, and comprehensive online databases for its medical students.

Admissions
